This Week in Crypto Games: Sonic SVM TikTok Airdrop on Solana, MLG Meme Coin Soars

Published

on

The crypto and NFT gaming space is busier than ever lately, what with prominent games starting to release, token airdrops piling up, and a seemingly constant array of other things happening at all times. It’s a lot to take in!

Luckily, Decrypt’s GG is all over it. And if you need a quick way to get caught up on the latest moves around crypto video games, we’re happy to present This Week in Crypto Games.

Our weekend roundup serves up the biggest news from the past week, along with a few other tidbits you might have missed. We also showcase a few of our original stories from the week.

Biggest news

TikTok airdrop: Sonic SVM, a layer-2 gaming chain built on top of Solana, launched its SONIC token on Tuesday. The token peaked at a $443 million market cap but has since fallen to $277 million. With this, players of the project’s TikTok tap-to-earn game Sonic X were able to claim their token allocations—with the claim period ending on January 30.

The game followed the simple tapping premise that most games within the genre follow, but innovated by launching the game via TikTok rather than Telegram. This helped the project reach more than 2 million players, which Sonic SVM said has proven it to be a success. Now, Sonic SVM wishes to onboard third-party projects to follow in its footsteps.

Call of Duty meme coin: 360noscope420blazeit (MLG) skyrocketed 5,200% over just six days thanks to Call of Duty-themed nostalgia. The Solana meme coin hearkens back to the perceived golden era of Call of Duty—before “omnimovement” and overly complex killstreaks, or the flood of microtransactions and goofy skins. It’s not just vibes either: They’ve launched custom online servers for classic Call of Duty games to draw in a community of crypto gamers.

This approach quickly attracted a cult-like following, but when members of iconic esports team FaZe Clan started shilling the token, it went parabolic. Richard “FaZe Banks” Bengtson believed in the token so much that he even got a tattoo of the original MLG logo—that is, Major League Gaming, an organization that was at the heart of the Call of Duty esports scene.

The MLG token isn’t an official offering of that Activision-owned tournament organizer, of course, but that hasn’t stopped it from posting monster gains. MLG has peaked at a price of nearly $0.178 as of this writing, putting it at peak market cap of about $177 million on Saturday. It’s down almost 30% since then.

The Machines Arena on Steam and PS5: Ethereum hero shooter The Machines Arena—which runs on gaming network Ronin—is coming to new platforms, and will release on leading PC marketplace Steam as well as the PlayStation 5 console. However, due to both platforms having restrictive crypto policies, those versions of the game will have zero or potentially limited crypto features.

On Steam, there will be absolutely no crypto features. However, for the PlayStation 5 release, Directive Games Design Manager David Gracia told Decrypt the company is still in discussions with Sony about how crypto elements could be implemented. This is something to keep an eye on, as we’ve yet to see a game successfully implement live crypto features on PlayStation (Off the Grid, in early access, has a testnest blockchain on the back end but no current player-facing on-chain features).

ICYMI

  • Telegram game Trump’s Empire claimed to have surpassed 4 million total players.
  • A Pudgy Penguins game is in development by Playember, set to launch on Abstract.
  • Transak went live on Ethereum gaming network Ronin with its fiat-to-crypto infrastructure.
  • An AI agent called Jaihozbased on Axie Infinity co-founder Jeff Jihoz” Zirlin—launched on Ronin thanks to the Virtuals Protocol.
  • PIXEL, the token tied to social farming game Pixels, is set to receive staking soon.

Arbitrum Awards Biggest-Ever Foundation Grant to Lotte, the South Korean Megacorp

Published

on

Arbitrum, the largest layer-2 network on top of Ethereum, has awarded its biggest-ever developer grant to Lotte Group, the multibillion-dollar South Korean conglomerate known for its vast portfolio of shopping malls, media companies and entertainment properties. According to Offchain Labs, the developer behind Arbitrum, the grant cements Arbitrum as the main blockchain infrastructure provider for Caliverse, Lotte’s metaverse gaming platform.

Offchain Labs shared the news at CES 2025, the technology tradeshow happening this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. A representative for the company declined to disclose the exact size of the grant “at this stage.” It was technically awarded by the non-profit Arbitrum Foundation, which periodically doles out grants in $ARB tokens to help spur development in the Arbitrum ecosystem.

“Lotte is Arbitrum Foundation’s largest grant recipient to date. And we’re proud to be working with partners so closely aligned with our vision,” said John Park, Head of Korea at The Arbitrum Foundation.

Lotte’s Arbitrum integration could signal renewed interest from traditional companies in building blockchain-based virtual worlds—the “metaverse” concept that earned mainstream buzz a few years ago but has since become less top-of-mind for many technologists and investors. Lotte first showed interest in releasing metaverse-related products in 2022 and announced that it was entering a “strategic partnership” with Arbitrum last year.

Caliverse is mainly a venue where the South Korean megacompany experiments with emerging tech trends like artificial intelligence, virtual reality and crypto. Caliverse users can explore virtual worlds featuring differing kinds of media content and futuristic shopping experiences. The app currently features content from a grab-bag of big brands, ranging from 7-Eleven to the Tomorrowland music festival. Much of the content on Caliverse comes from fashion and beauty companies like Givenchy, MCM, and L’Occitane.

Users can currently shop for those brands or experience concerts and other kinds of media within the Caliverse app. The new integration with Arbitrum means that blockchain users will be able to pay for certain services using crypto, and systems like in-game transactions could start running on-chain.

The Arbitrum blockchain has become a popular choice among gaming platforms, with the network experiencing a 72% year-over-year growth in 2024 for gaming, according to Offchain Labs. According to a press release the company shared with CoinDesk, Arbitrum currently hosts 119 game titles and 23 gaming-focused blockchains through its Arbitrum Orbit stack, a customizable toolkit that lets developers create their own blockchains based on Arbitrum’s technology.

“Arbitrum’s blockchain is the ideal home ground for Lotte Caliverse, delivering industry-leading 250ms block times that ensure high-quality performance within virtual worlds and gaming experiences,” said Steven Goldfeder, the co-founder and CEO of Offchain Labs. “With Arbitrum now powering Lotte Caliverse, in-game transactions will be seamlessly integrated on-chain and will eliminate transaction latency, providing users with a smooth, consumer-friendly experience that sets a new standard for Arbitrum-based interactions in virtual worlds.”

This Week in Crypto Games: Hamster Kombat ‘HamsterVerse’, Telegram Game Airdrop Updates

Published

Our weekend roundup serves up the biggest news from the past week-plus—this is an extended edition due to the holidays—along with a few other tidbits you might have missed.

Biggest news

Hamster Kombat TON layer-2: After the fourth-largest gaming token launch of 2024, the makers of Telegram tap-to-earn game Hamster Kombat revealed plans to create a layer-2 network on top of The Open Network (TON).

This came after a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) vote overwhelmingly voted in favor of the move, with 1.1 billion HMSTR token voting power in favor and just 104,368 against. However, it’s worth noting that the top two voters hold over 88% of all voting power as of this writing, giving a couple of whales immense influence.

Prior to this, the devs announced that Hamster Kombat’s hotly anticipated (and much-delayed) second season will be “more than just a game,” with three games now in the works to become the core of an entertainment ecosystem using the IP. Called HamsterVerse, a closed beta is already underway for 30,000 community members.

Off the Grid stands tall: As the end of the year dawned, Avalanche-based shooter Off the Grid raked in some media accolades. Not only did it win GG’s Game of the Year, but the battle royale shooter also won Gam3s’ Game of the Year award and made it to a Rolling Stone year-end gaming list.

Gunzilla Games shared its 2025 plans with Decrypt alongside the GOTY honors. Most notably, this includes an estimated Q1 2025 date for its GUNZ network to enter mainnet, which would enable its GUN token to be freely traded. Before then, the studio wants to launch ranked and solo queue modes, and open up the remaining 80% of the map while kicking off the game’s storyline.

After that, Gunzilla will be looking to onboard third-party developers to the GUNZ network, and is even eying a possible Telegram mini app for the ecosystem. It should be a big year for one of crypto gaming’s biggest success stories to date.

Illuvium’s next steps: Crypto gaming franchise Illuvium announced how it will be moving forward in the new year. The project previously launched three titles that fed into each other, both through shared resources and a narrative loop—but focusing on all three titles has been too challenging. Going forward, the team will prioritize efforts on one game at a time, starting with the auto-battler Illuvium Arena.

The lengthy blog post also touches on plans to reduce microtransactions, add more content, and raise more funding. Perhaps most significantly, the post ponders the possibility of temporarily shutting down the flagship title Illuvium Overworld until it is a “fully realized experience.” But coming into 2025, improving the Overworld MMO experience is said to be the Illuvium team’s “top priority.”

The Most Anticipated Games of 2025

Published

on

Look, 2024 was a pretty great year for games, delivering gems like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Astro Bot, Balatro, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Off the Grid, and more. But we’re an optimistic bunch, and we think 2025 could be even better.

That’s the vibe we’re getting from the early batch of games expected to launch this year, spanning sequels and original titles alike, ranging from Grand Theft Auto 6 to (potentially) Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and plenty more in between.

Wait, let’s linger on that for a moment: GTA 6 is indeed expected to come out later this year, only a dozen years after its predecessor. Let’s hope that promise holds true. And the Nintendo Switch 2 is likely just around the corner, as well.

There’s a lot to get excited about already, and we’ve started highlighting the biggest hitters coming down the pipeline in 2025. You’ll find some of our early picks below for games to keep your eye on, but stay tuned as we’ll be updating this list regularly throughout the year to expand it and swap in newly revealed games.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Release Date: Late 2025
Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S

This is undoubtedly the most anticipated game of 2025—and perhaps one of the most eagerly awaited games of all time. The last entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise remains incredibly popular, bringing in billions of dollars and still boasting 24 million monthly players despite being nearly 12 years old.

That’s part of why we’re all waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6. Set in the fictional state of Leonida, which is quite clearly based on Florida, players will be able to revisit Vice City in a story revolving around two protagonists in what looks to be a Bonnie and Clyde-esque story.

There have been all sorts of rumors around cryptocurrency featuring in the game, whether it’s Bitcoin or Ethereum, or perhaps an original token created by Rockstar Games. But as of now, they’re completely unsubstantiated.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Release Date: February 14
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC

Ubisoft is back with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which will see players transported to 16th century Japan to fight as a Japanese shinobi, Naoe, and a historical samurai, Yasuke. The story will see the two protagonists clash as their respective factions fight as part of the political unification of Japan.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Release Date: 2025
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5

The eighth core entry into the iconic shooter franchise, Doom: The Dark Ages is set to be developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. The first-person shooter will act as a prequel to the 2016 Doom title, following the franchise protagonist fighting through hell.

But the game promises to set itself apart from the rest of the series by adding dragon riding and focusing on melee battle. It’s a bit of a vibe shift, but not too much—after all, it’s still wildly, hilariously violent.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

Release date: February 11
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Switch

Fancy world domination, but don’t want to get your shoes dirty? Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, developed by Firaxis, allows you to control famous leaders from history to fulfill your warlord fantasies without the messy part—or, alternatively, strive for greatness without causing so much destruction. It’s up to you.

New to the series will be urban title development, a new diplomacy screen, a new “age” system, and new civilizations at the dawn of every age—and Harriet Tubman as a new leader.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Release Date: 2025
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was initially announced at E3 2017—yep, that long ago—initially under development by Bandai Namco Studios . However, it moved hands in 2019 to Retro Studios, the team behind the original Prime trilogy.

It does mostly look like more of the same at this point, but given the quality of the previous entries—and how long it’s been since Prime 3 in 2007—fans are likely to be happy with it. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been announced for Switch, but we suspect it will also release on the upcoming Switch 2 as well.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

Release Date: TBA
Platform: PlayStation 5

Naughty Dog’s first totally new IP since The Last of Us, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet takes the third-person action genre to space.

In the trailer, we meet Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter on a mission on Sempiria, a planet that hasn’t received any communications for over 600 years. She is in search of a member of the Five Aces crime syndicate, who Mun appears to have history with. Once on the ground, our protagonist shows off a futuristic melee weapon and starts slaying robots. The trailer gives a cool retro-future vibe, and Naughty Dog rarely misses. This is one to be excited for.

Ghost of Yōtei

Release Date: 2025
Platform: PlayStation 5

Sucker Punch Productions’ return after the success of Ghost of Tsushima is not quite a sequel, but definitely (somehow) related—although how exactly is unclear. Set some 300 years after Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is expected to have the same stealth action-fighting gameplay loop set in even more beautiful landscapes.

Fable

Release Date: 2025
Platforms: Xbox Series X/S, PC

Developed by Playground Games, known for racing game Forza Horizon, action role-playing game (RPG) Fable 4 looks to transport us back to the world of Albion for the first time since card game Fable Fortune released in 2017. Fable 4 looks to turn gamers into their own heroes, fighting through enemies using a mixture of swordplay and magic as player choices build or break their reputation.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

Release Date: 2025
Platforms:PS5/PS4, Xbox Series X/S + One, PC

Elden Ring: Nightreign—developed by From Software and published by Bandai Namco—will take place in Limveld, a similar location to Limgrave from the original title. This three-player co-op spinoff throws players through another gauntlet of mythical creatures and challenging boss fights. Have you (and two pals) got what it takes?

Nintendo Switch 2

Image: Shutterstock

Release Date: TBD

Yes, the Nintendo Switch 2 is hardware rather than software—but besides Grand Theft Auto 6, is there anything in gaming more broadly anticipated than Nintendo’s next device?

The original Switch has been an undeniable smash after the deeply underwhelming Wii U, and Nintendo has continued to ride its momentum for nearly eight years now. Leaks and reports point to a successor that doesn’t scrap the winning hybrid formula, but makes some key upgrades in terms of power and hopefully durability. We’re ready, Nintendo.

Editor’s note: This story was originally published on December 16, 2023 and was last updated with new information on January 1, 2025.
